New Yorker here. You're 100% correct. Also, I don't believe for an instant that Penny would be on trial if he and Neely had shared the same skin color. There was a similar incident not long ago on the subway, in which a black man defended others. Charges against him were dropped very quickly. Another well-pubicized recent incident was when a Hispanic bodega owner stabbed an attacker and was arrested and charged with murder. There was such an outcry that the charges were dropped also.

Absolutely agree. It just makes no logical sense . Nothing to do with racism… everything to do with mental illness and oddball new laws. These laws will be turned around hopefully , very soon.. nice having hero’s who know how to protect others.

Same groupthink as the left's attitude towards Hamas & Israel.

Correct - the instinct to make apologies for or celebrate jihadist barbarism, and vilify secular liberal democracies, is a perfect example of the sort of moral inversion I'm discussing here. I've written numerous essays exploring precisely this topic - check out this one for instance: https://maxthinks.substack.com/p/genocidal-islamism-and-its-liberal

Progressives are no longer “apologists” of Islamist and leftist terrorism—they are celebrators, enablers and committers of it.

Martin Blake, an armed police officer in London, has only recently been found not guilty of murder after shooting Chris Kaba, a black man, nearly two years ago. The day after the shooting the usual race baiting politicians ( Abbot, Butler, Khan, Lewis ) were screaming institutional racism and the judge in charge of the preliminary hearings, in an extraordinarily reckless act released Blake’s name to the press. The result of all of this is a police man with a 10k bounty on his head, a criminal investigation in to him, suspension from duties and a further disciplinary hearing at the Met. Also cue the usual outrage mobs. Who would take this job? .

Only after the trial do we find out that Kaba, a career criminal and gangster who had shot someone in a night club the week before and who’s girlfriend had a restraining order against him for violence, was being sought after by the police and the stolen car he was driving was of interest and should be stopped. When it was stopped and surrounded, Kaba tried to ram the police out of the way and it seems was quite happy to run police over in the process.

Have the left media outlets and politicians who were quick to condemn this as a racist act apologised. No. Some have doubled down.

In the Penny trial people can see with their own eyes the disastrous consequences of Democratic policies in causing the deterioration of quality of life in our major cities. The areas of civic life where this erosion is most clearly seen is in crime and homelessness. Progressive prosecutors have raised the minimum value to prosecute shoplifting to $1000 in many cities with the obvious result of gangs of criminals taking full advantage of that ridiculous limit and destroying retail stores directly or by requiring all items of even minimal value to be locked up.

The ending of stop and frisk policing and the requirement for charged criminals to post bail has resulted in a flood of violence including car jackings and homicides. Anyone in an urban area who watches the nightly news knows this is true but no one feels free to mention it and especially its racial component.

The homeless, largely drug addicted and/or mentally ill are also allowed to degrade the quality of life of productive citizens because no one will say no: "no, you can't camp anywhere you want", "no, you can't shoot up and leave your used needles lying around", "no, you can't shit in our streets", no, you can’t panhandle aggressively”.

Someone has to start saying no to both groups backed up by real action if we are to survive as a civilized society and Democratic mayors, prosecutors and judges have made clear that they won’t or can’t say no.

Amen Max. What Penny did was old school and honorable. Very little in the new school ‘left’ is honorable, it’s just predictable and weak. That said, let’s fix the mental health fiasco.

Daniel Penny is a true hero. A "real man." He rushed to the aid of his fellow citizens and defended them, putting his own life on the line. He should be celebrated.

Love this clear-eyed analysis. I also think that Daniel Penny is getting slammed by the left because he is a man exemplifying the traditionally masculine virtue of being a protector. I think he should be honored for having the courage to step into that role in that moment. But in the progressive worldview, such roles are inherently problematic, or even “toxic.”

The only thing that coulda been worse for Penny is if Neely was Trans.

It's PRETEND inversion... It's a facade of moral inversion, maintained by people who are just as selfish and ambitious and grasping and superficial as others (more so, in many cases). Unfortunately, the pretensions direct our institutions and governments and legislatures and they are fixated on reacting against nature, erasing tradition, and fomenting utopia. Madness
